CONTEMPORARY ART IN SAVONLINNA
Gallery Kalhama & Piippo has the great pleasure of opening its summer exhibition for the third time at the Savonlinna former art museum (Olavinkatu 40). The exhibition is open every day from 11am – 6pm in the city centre of Savonlinna for the duration of the Operafestival, 2nd to 31st of July.
The exhibition of 2010 is called ”Posh Painting” and it presents the most interesting currents in contemporary painting by five strong and original painters. The artists in the exhibition are Gabriele Basch, Marcus Eek, Jukka Rusanen, Marianna Uutinen and Viggo Wallensköld.
What makes a painting ”posh”? It is not necessarily a question about the scale of the work, but more about its expressive power. The five artists are connected by a bold and unprejudiced attitude towards their work. Where it in Uutinen’s or Basch’s work is manifested in forms of painting that remind us of popular culture and the media age, it is in Wallensköld’s body of work expressed through the ambiguous and complex content. What the artists also have in common, is the strong connection to the history of art. This is seen in both Eek’s vivid paintings and Rusanen’s works that draw on historical genres and modernistic tradition – in the form of painting, installation and video works.
