Kalhama&Piippo has a great pleasure to open the year 2011 with the group exhibition RE/VOLT showcasing new and recent works of six artists. Instead of the opening reception there will be “a half time banquet” on 28th January 2011 at 4-6 pm. Warmly welcome!
Mi Duncker (b.1963), Sasha Huber (b.1975), Susanna Majuri (b.1978), Rauha Mäkilä (b.1980), Samppa Törmälehto (b.1977) and Timo Vaittinen (b.1976) are all artists who have been directing
the ways of art making within their own generation in the field of contemporary art. A common feature among the exhibition artists is their brilliant skill to connect complicated subject matters of today to an unprejudiced but playful, even humoristic, expression.
Literally revolt means rebellion, takeover, mayhem, conquest and rising to an idea. Re-volt in turn means a repetition of movement or creation of tension. The six artists working with different media have lifted both the individual and collective experience of the modern world into their work. Viewers confront familiar indications that might be invisible or forgotten but now are remembered and shown – although somehow masked, reformed or recycled.
The rebellion is hidden and the possibility of multiple interpretations makes it fascinating. Even though melancholy and anarchy step up in receding glimpses, the rebellion conveys positive and progressive connotations. Aesthetics, as well as the search of new ways of expression,
plays an important role in the work of these artists.
The artists are right now having a busy season. Many of them are currently participating in solo and group shows, in Finland and abroad.
RE/VOLT continues the gallery’s series of thematic group exhibitions. “Urban Story” was seen in 2009, and the summer exhibitions “Performances” and “Posh Painting” took place in Savonlinna
in 2009 and 2010.
