Paul Rimmington: Down to Earth & Outer Space
23.1.–1.3.2009
Kalhama&Piippo is pleased to open the year 2009 with the solo exhibition of British painter Paul Rimmington (b.1974) who has been working and living in Helsinki for over ten years.
“What do I do in this fine gallery?”, asks Rimmington. He doesn’t paint for the art world but for himself and the viewers of his art. His work is straightforward and honest. “My works are just paintings, as simple as that”, he depicts his work and refuses to call it great Art. The viewer encounters easily the straightness of his art – its humor, self-irony, angst and melancholy.
Rimmington expands the concept of “pure” painting by moving into the fields of assemblage, installation and video. The works are three-dimensional objects consisting of many layers of paint and often even processed within many years of time. Despite the mass of material the works leave a light, even fragile impression. The play of the materiality and lightness correlate with the content of Rimmington’s art, which is simultaneously both strong and sensitive.
Rimmington graduated from the School of Art and Design at Coventry University, which carries a reputation of one of the radical universities of the 1960s in England. The intellectual freedom of the school can be seen in Rimmington’s free expressivity and a cheerful attitude to life.
