International gallery opens its door in Helsinki:
Reforming the way of working
4.12.2007
Gallery Kalhama & Piippo Contemporary, a brand new contemporary art gallery opens its doors in the heart of Helsinki on Mannerheimintie 3 B on January 11, 2008. This extensive exhibition space of 500 square metres presents a new arena for the sharpest edge of Finnish art. Current international artists and phenomena also figure in the gallery. The gallery offers its visitors a chance to dwell in its exhibition and lounge daily, in the midst of the city’s pedestrian centre.
Exhibition Programme
Gallery Kalhama & Piippo publishes its spring 2008 exhibition programme and list of artists on its new web page at www.kalhamapiippo.com. The opening exhibition presents sculptor Villu Janisoo’s (Estonia) massive sound installation Wave and painter Jussi Niva’s (Finland) new paintings from the Diffus series.
People behind the Gallery
The founders of the gallery, curator Pilvi Kalhama (Phil.Lic.), managing director Mikko Kalhama and corporate owner Antti Piippo share an interest in contemporary art that developed into a gallery project over a year ago. A solid combination of art expertise and business know-how responds to the needs of galleries, clientele and artists in the 21st century. Kalhama & Piippo aims at claiming a position as a fast reacting forum for current phenomena, where contemporary art in all its variety and different media gets visibility.
– We challenge the established roles and borders of the gallery world. We present new ways of thinking and working, says Artistic Director Pilvi Kalhama.
Tool for the Artist
Gallery Kalhama & Piippo constructs the career of an artist perseveringly with the different stages in mind.
– The artist is our most important client, says Pilvi Kalhama.
Alongside organising high level exhibitions, the gallery takes care of communication and international promotion for the artists. The gallery also invests in co-operation with foreign curators, museums, galleries, collectors, festivals and other agents in the field of art.
– The gallery today has to be a tool for the artists to progress in their work, says Pilvi Kalhama.
The artistic profile of the gallery consists of carefully selected invited Finnish and foreign artists: remarkable well-known names and fresh promises.
The Time of Finnish Art Is Now
– The cutting edge of Finnish contemporary art is sharp, but unfortunately thin in the international consciousness.
International collectors, curators and museum people often regret how hard it is to get a current and reliable overview of Finnish contemporary art and artists, says Pilvi Kalhama.
The gallery serves art audience, collectors and museums with professional skill. Gallery Kalhama & Piippo also wants to bear national responsibility for exporting art.
– Contemporary Finnish art has a great possibility to take the next steps on the road to internationalisation right now, says Antti Piippo.
