Gallery Kalhama & Piippo Contemporary was founded in autumn 2007. The grand opening of the gallery and the very first exhibition was held in January 2008. The gallery is located in the center of Helsinki city and is one of the largest gallery spaces in Scandinavia.
Gallery Kalhama & Piippo Contemporary shows and promotes both established and emerging international contemporary artists. The combination of established and young talents makes the art profile of the gallery challenging, persistent and unprejudiced. The regularly changing exhibitions represent the most actual and innovative contemporary art where various media and themes are being discussed. Gallery displays solo shows by represented artists as well as curated group exhibitions of invited artist whose collaboration with the gallery is project based.
The founders of the gallery are art historians Pilvi and Mikko Kalhama whose experience and knowledge in art projects, curating exhibitions and art management over the past ten years is now combined with the long term global business experience of corporate owner Antti Piippo. The artistic profile and the exhibition program is run by Pilvi Kalhama who has worked as a contemporary art researcher, senior theory lecturer (the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts) and independent curator and writer in the field of contemporary art. Along with the founders, Gallery Kalhama & Piippo Contemporary has a professional staff operating in exhibition productions, communication and public relations.
