Saara Ekström Rosario at Turku Castle
Saara Ekström’s latest work work Rosario is on view at Turku Castle between 12.8.2011 and 29.1.2012
Rosario is a lyrical media artwork, consisting of a film triptych, which combines techniques such as video, film, tomography and animation. The artwork interprets the imagery generated by the Finnish Mary-myth and the symbolism that lies within it. The sculptures by the medieval Masters of Lieto and Rusko have been important sources of inspiration for Rosario, their Madonna sculptures in particular.
The media artwork is shown in close vicinity to the medieval sculptures, which inspired Ekströms work. The sculptures are part of The Museum Centre of Turku’s collections. They are on display as a part of Turku Castle’s permanent exhibition.
Rosario lifts forth metaphors of womanhood and sexuality. An image of another kind of Virgin takes shape, a multidimensional character in which extremes may find a common form of manifestation. Strength and fragility, spirituality and sensuality, self-sufficiency and meekness are combined in an image of a woman listening to her inner voice. The exhibition Rosario is a part of the Turku 2011 European Capital of Culture programme.
