GALLERY KALHAMA&PIIPPO AT MARKET 2010 At Market 2010
Gallery Kalhama & Piippo Contemporary has the privilege to show an overview of challenging and diverse Finnish painting. With their individual strong styles artists Hannaleena Heiska, Jukka Korkeila and Anna Retulainen represent different types of contemporary painting.
HANNALEENA HEISKA’s (b.1973) art has a strong relation to the imagery and genres of popular culture. On the one hand she shows the enchantment she feels for her subject matter, on the other hand she ironises them. The viewer encounters fairytale like characters, often a mixture between man and animal. Heiska’s painting is versatile and experimental. She challenges herself as a painter and shows the traces of the paintbrush to the viewer. Heiska graduated from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in 2006. Her debut exhibition “Not of This World” at Kalhama&Piippo in February of 2008 was a great success. Since then Heiska has been invited to many prestigious international exhibitions, for example the Momentum biennale in Norway in the autumn of 2009. At Market 2010 Kalhama&Piippo shows recent works by Heiska, in which the artist associates to contemporary sub cultures and (pop) cultural phenomena, but where traces of art history and Nordic mythology can be found.
JUKKA KORKEILA (b.1968) breaks boundaries both in the content of his images and in the tradition of painting, which he brings into a contemporary visual aesthetic. Korkeila disrupts formal ways of thinking and questions cultural norms, wherever he encounters one. The “super-baroque” layering of visual material has already become a characteristic trademark of Korkeila’s art. Korkeila lives and works in both Helsinki and Berlin and is one of the most highly respected Finnish artists outside of Finland. In 1999 Korkeila was appointed the Young Artist Award in Finland and in 2004 he participated in the São Paulo Biennale. At Market 2010 Kalhama&Piippo will show a wall installation of small-scale paintings on paper that Korkeila has worked with throughout his career, but which rarely have been exhibited extensively. All the watercolours at Market 2010 are on display for the first time.
ANNA RETULAINEN (b.1969) examines the complexity between the tradition of painting and contemporary art. She combines traditional fruit and vegetable still lifes and flower arrangements with impulsive and spontaneous painting. Retulainen paints expressively and boldly “from memory” or by “imagining”. What is pictured is irrelevant. Instead the physical painting and the brushstrokes that transmit the feeling of presence is what is most important. Retulainen’s works are represented in all the important public collections in Finland. She has exhibited extensively in both solo and group exhibitions, also internationally, most recently in Sweden in the exhibition ”Ei saa peittää – Får inte övertäckas” at Eskilstuna konstmuseum. During the last few years her popularity has exploded in Finland. At Market 2010 Kalhama&Piippo shows the artists recent paintings that have not been exhibited in Sweden before.
